Nestled at the connecting-point
of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Greece has a distinct culture
that stands out even from these impressive surroundings. The mainland
of Greece lies on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. To the north,
mountains provide a natural border - formerly, a good protection for
the country; now, a perfect spot for skiing. Below, the land breaks
off into over a thousand jewel-like islands that dot the Ionian, Mediterranean
and Aegean seas. These seas, for the last five thousand years or so,
have provided a steady stream of visitors from around the globe.

|

No wonder Greece became the mother,
father and fairy godmother to all of Western civlization. The philosophers,
playwrights, architects, scientists and storytellers of this ancient
land have infused every aspect of today's world - from the Democratic
process, to Homer J. Simpson, to John Keats' haunting "Ode on a Grecian
Urn," to the Olympic games, to the Turner Network's new version of the
Odyssey (starring Vanessa Williams, no less - not a Greek, but arguably
a goddess). Today's Greece proves just as enchanting, from its sapphire
seas to its whitewashed buildings, its ambrosial food and wine and some
of the friendliest, most spirited natives on earth.

abundance of activities on-shore, as well. Touring, hiking, shopping,
walking -- and most of all dining -- are some of the ways you can pass
the hours in the picturesque villages of the Mediterranean. Superb restaurants
abound on the Greek Islands. The food is always appetizing and quite
inexpensive. Local residents will give You a chance to converse in Your
